G.I Pongase admits that the practice and experience of doing visual art/graphic design work has contributed to the molding of his self-discipline and overall character. In art as in life, the artist lives by the notion of balancing the heart and the mind. He also attributes the physical, emotional and spiritual strength as necessary tools to overcome the constant struggles of an artist’s life.
In this exhibition, ‘Potentiality’ speaks of the acceptance of the artist’s process of ambiguity and being open to possible techniques and compositions that only abstraction can offer. The artist starts with no preconceived idea or subject as the springboard for every blank canvas. The unstructured nature of the composition’s build-up evokes different possibilities that would ultimately define a particular piece as they slowly come together. The artist would then layer the surface ground using spontaneous movements and tools in relation to dominant feelings and experiences until they evoke a sense of accomplishment. Inspite of the necessity for a steady income stream that can support his family, the artist status as a full-time employee in a graphics and web development company has not deterred the artist to continue his creative production after work hours and holidays. The artist views his recent collection as a mirror to the contrasting desires and the personal struggles that come along with being a visual arts painter and company employee at the same time. The artist’s acceptance of ambiguity in the present is therefore suggestive of a future full of possibilities. He is finally living out his dream of staging a professional art exhibition despite the odds. POTENTIALITY is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Qube Gallery.
