Hearth & Home
16 - 30 May 2026
Jan Sunday
Hearth and Home is a visual homecoming—a return to Cebu that gathers the tactile remnants of a creative journey spanning several years. This exhibition is more than a retrospective; it is an intimate mapping of the spaces where the domestic meets the divine.
About the artist
Jan Sunday (b. 1988) is a self-taught visual artist and musician from Cebu City. Her practice began through nude photography informed by the “female gaze,” presenting the body as a space of agency, spirituality, and transformation rather than objectification. Over time, she incorporated distressed mirrors into her works, inviting viewers into layered exchanges between subject, reflection, and observer.
Her recent works center on the reconstruction of found tapestries, particularly their reverse sides, which she treats as sites of hidden narratives and “alternative histories.” Through this process, Sunday explores ideas of duality, memory, and interconnected realities, where visible and concealed surfaces coexist within the same material form. Guided by feminist thought, her practice examines selfhood, history, and spirituality through deeply personal yet universal reflections. She also co-leads KalawakanSpacetime and has exhibited internationally.
Sex And The Mystery Of The Wound, 2024
At the core of this collection are tapestries that incorporate elements of the most private female experience: lingerie and thongs. In Hearth and Home, these are not treated as mere garments or provocative symbols, but as relics ofthe sacred feminine. By elevating these intimate objects into the realm of the "holy," the work explores the inherent sanctity of womanhood—the quiet strength, the vulnerability, and the life-giving essence that defines the domestic "hearth."
By deconstructing and weaving these materials into larger, complex tapestries, I aim to strip away their secular context and invite a more contemplative gaze. They are presented as icons of a personal liturgy, honoring the body as a temple and the home as its sanctuary. In the spirit of a true homecoming, these works—some of which have traveled through Manila’s contemporary spaces—now return to Qube Gallery in Cebu, finding their final resting place in the city where my creative journey began.
Through this "round up" of years and materials, I invite viewers to look past the surface of the fabric and see the layers of history, identity, and the enduring sacredness that resides in the things we keep closest to us.
